The Idle Rocks boutique hotel, which celebrated its centenary in 2013 has undergone a radical transformation and re-opened in July 2013. It cements St. Mawes’ reputation as a desirable Cornish location with the hotel widely considered one of the region’s top luxury British retreats.
Purchased in 2010 by Karen and David Richards, leading entrepreneur in the motor racing world and former Chairman of Aston Martin, the hotel offers guests a home-from-home experience, has a simple yet welcoming design in an idyllic location.
David Richards said of the hotel: “We wanted to create an experience that felt more like staying at a friend’s beautiful house than a hotel. It is all about re-engaging with the simple pleasures in life. There are no check-in desks or the usual formalities one expects at a hotel – guests can eat breakfast whenever they like and will be encouraged to throw another log on the fire. The food is local and fresh, with daily deliveries from fishermen on the harbour nearby. Our ethos is all about down to earth, relaxed fun for people wanting a genuine break from their overcomplicated lives.”
The hotel became a member of the world renowned Relais & Châteaux collection of hotels as of 1st January 2016. The Idle Rocks was selected for its reputation as a desirable Cornish hotel, led by a passionate team committed to maintaining relationships with both hotel guests and the local community.
The hotel has 19 rooms, all individually and uniquely designed by Karen who has been responsible for the interiors herself. The Idle Rocks is a marriage between traditional coastal culture and contemporary design sensibility.
The hotel is centred on the great outdoors, with its water front location. Its restaurant and terrace have unspoilt views across the harbour, serving locally produced food, ales and wines. Days will be spent crab racing on the terrace, sailing the local waters, family time on the beach and invigorating coastal walks. Followed by hot crumpets and pots of tea in front of the log fire, long soaks in the bath and dinner amongst friends and family as the seagulls go to sleep.
The sister property, the St. Mawes Hotel, launched following a full refurbishment in summer 2015.
The Idle Rocks, St. Mawes
The Idle Rocks first opened in 1913 and has since seen many incarnations. It became a popular luxury hotel in the pre-WW2 years, continuing to flourish after the war, with St. Mawes being seen as England’s answer to St. Tropez. It was purchased by David and Karen Richards in 2010, and closed in October 2012 for the renovation, re-opening in July 2013. David Richards, previously Chairman of Aston Martin, is a leading entrepreneur in the motor racing world and his wife Karen has designed the hotel’s interiors. www.idlerocks.com
