Berlin one of the best cities to visit in December because of the Christmas markets, lights and decoration all around, which create a lovely atmosphere.
There are so many Christmas markets in Berlin during this period, which makes it hard to choose. The ones well worth a visit are:
Weihnachts Zauber Gendarmenmarkt, one of the most popular markets in the city, situated next to beautiful architectural sights in the city centre. This stylish Christmas market attracts thousands of visitors every year from all over the world looking for traditional gifts, food and drinks.
Here you will also find Michelin-star chefs preparing haute cuisine in heated tents. Next to some indoor stalls where you can warm up during your shopping spree.
At the Christmas market at the Memorial Church there are more than 100 stalls which form a traditional Christmas market next to Kurfürstendamm. The stalls offer gifts, clothing and of course traditional bratwurst, waffles, hot chocolate, Glühwein and homemade eggnog, with small carousels giving the market a nostalgic charm.
Winter World of Potsdamer Platz has lights in all the trees of the old Potsdamer street, which makes it an impressive sight. At the crafts market you can watch bakers, potters, felters and basket weavers make Christmas gifts. And of course this one again has many drinking and eating stalls.
The Christmas market in front of the Roten Rathaus is more quiet and open every night (except Christmas Eve) until the 28th of December. With a big ice rink and many stalls in front of the impressive city hall, it is a more relaxed option if you prefer to avoid crowds.
The small Christmas market in Mitte near the Berliner Dom, is mostly special because of its surroundings. It has a huge traditional ferris wheel, which will give you a great view right at the TV tower and Berliner Dom.
The Christmas Market at Schloss Charlottenburg is a stunning sight with the impressive building behind it all lit up in colors. Here they have real reindeers, a choir and natural decorations.
For luxury shopping, especially in December, a visit to KaDeWe, Europe’s largest department store located on Tauentzienstrasse near Kurfürstendamm, is highly recommended. This is the best place for Christmas inspiration and decoration widely displayed in the main entrance hall, which turns the store into Winter Wonderland.
Kurfürstendamm itself is worth a visit as well. Also called the Champs-Elysées of Berlin, with its statured avenue and many famous designer boutiques. As it is the most famous street of the city, naturally it is totally decorated during this season.
Quartier 206 is a special high-end department store in the middle of Berlin on Friedrichstrasse. It has many luxury shops and unique interior, which makes it a must visit for both shopping- and architecture lovers. Marvel about the glass ceilings, marble stairways and geometrical details all around, as well as the beautiful Christmas decorations.
