History of Yves Saint Laurent

By Ana Teodora:

In the past 2 weeks I started wearing more and more my Saint Laurent bag, which I got almost two years ago. Because of the love for the brand, I decided to write a bit about the history of the Saint Laurent Paris house.

YSL was introduced to Christian Dior at a young age and this was part of the enormous success the house has had. As described by the designer, working with Dior was magical. “He taught me the basis of my art. Whatever was to happen next, I never forgot the years I spent at by his side”. One year before his death, Dior had chosen Saint Laurent to succeed him as designer. Saint Laurent found himself, at the young age of 21 head of the fashion house Christian Dior.

In 1960, the house of YSL was born, founded by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé with the headquarters in Paris, France. The house of YSL is well known for its tuxedo jackets and suits for women and instantly, at the time they were introduced to the public, became a trademark of the brand. He was also known for his use of non-European cultural references and non-white models. The famous model Iman was his “ideal of beauty”.

Throughout the history of the brand, the designer was given different distinctions and awards for his creations. In the 80’s, Yves Saint Laurent became the first living fashion designer that was honored with a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Was Yves Saint Laurent the greatest designer of the 20th century? Many seem to believe so, he was definitely the most celebrated designer of the past 25 years.

Despite this, Saint Laurent closed the couture house of YSL in 2002. However, Hedi Slimane, the creative & imagine director that took the position after the death of Yves Saint Laurent, in 2008, announced this year that he will revive the YSL couture line. Looking forward to seeing the creations!

Here I am wearing my Saint Laurent Paris Duffle Bag in Royal Blue, a favorite. I’m also wearing the YSL military jacket, a trademark of the brand.
